Why Won’t My Cincinnati Furnace Heat Evenly?

One of the most common complaints of Cincinnati homeowners regarding their heating systems is the lack of even heating throughout the home. Some rooms are nice and toasty, while others remain chilly.

• Dirty air filters. When the air filter is caked with contaminants, air doesn’t flow through the system correctly. During heating season, you should check your filter monthly and replace it as needed, at minimum every three months.
• Air filter is too efficient. Did you ever imagine an air filter could be too efficient for your system? Ultra-high efficiency air filters won’t work with every furnace system. If your furnace has not been calibrated for use with such a filter, the filter can restrict air flow, resulting in uneven heating. Try installing a filter with a MERV 8 rating to preserve efficiency and facilitate airflow.
• Duct leaks. The average duct system can result in as much as 30 percent energy loss! That means 30 percent of the air intended for your living areas spills out of the duct system before reaching its intended destination. If the duct runs leading to certain rooms have leaks, the room will feel cooler than rooms with efficient, sealed duct runs. • Ducts aren’t sized correctly. For even heating, your duct system must be sized properly to work with the furnace. If the furnace and ductwork aren’t matched, it can lead to duct pressure issues, which can cause issues such as pulling in air from interior rooms and not forcing air out through vents properly.
