In the heat and humidity of a Cincinnati summer, one of the most nerve-wracking experiences is a broken air conditioner on one of the hottest days. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare though. Here are some tips for keeping your cool while you’re waiting for your house to get cold again.
Troubleshooting
As with a lot of things in life, sometimes there can be a very simple solution to a problem with your A/C that seems complex. Here are some easy things to check before calling an expert:
- Thermostat – Make sure the thermostat has power. You may need to replace the batteries with fresh ones if it doesn’t. If your thermostat is connected directly to the home’s electrical system, check the breaker to make sure it has not been tripped. This may sound obvious, but also make sure that it is set to cooling mode. It’s possible the settings may have changed without your knowledge.
- Power – Examine the exterior unit to make sure it is plugged in and the switch near the condenser is set to ‘on’. Also check your home’s electrical panel to make sure the breaker that powers the air conditioner’s air handler and condenser is not tripped and is functioning correctly.
- Air Filter – A clogged air filter can limit airflow, causing the system to overheat and shut down to protect it from damage. Replace a dirty filter with a new one or, if it is reusable, clean it well. Insert properly and give the system a little time to cool down before starting it again.
Turn Off the System to Wait for Repairs
Once you’ve exhausted the simple checks, shut down the system until it is repaired. Continuing to operate a malfunctioning air conditioner can lead to more problems, so prevent further damage by keeping it off until a professional comes.
