Is Unbalanced Ductwork Causing Discomfort in Your Cincinnati Home?

Ductwork Balancing Experts | Nelson Comfort

Ductwork comes in all shapes and sizes – the reason you may see different ductwork in your home is because duct systems are designed specifically for your home. When designing a duct system, many factors are considered, such as the type and capacity of your heating and cooling systems, and the number of rooms in your home.

The goal of a good duct system is to achieve balanced heating and cooling across the home. If you have hot spots and rooms that are much colder than others, unbalanced ductwork may be the cause. Unbalanced ductwork can cause discomfort throughout the home as well as inefficiency.

If the duct system in your home was originally balanced, what causes it to become unbalanced?

  • Air leaks: Every component of your duct system is fit together using sealants, staples, or other approved methods. Over time, sealants can deteriorate, and airflow can force sections of ductwork apart, causing air leaks. Air leaking out of the duct system before it reaches its final destination (rooms in your home) will throw the system off balance.
  • Malfunctioning dampers: Duct systems typically contain dampers, which control airflow to each run of ductwork. Dampers have a blade which opens and shuts, allowing air to move through the run. If the damper has malfunctioned and the blade is not moving correctly, the damper could cut airflow to a whole section of the home, causing that area to feel cold no matter how high you turn up the heat.

Your HVAC technician can determine if your duct system is unbalanced by measuring the airflow through the ducts. If problems are detected, the technician can rebalance or move dampers to equal out airflow to the entire home. When duct leaks cause unbalanced systems, a technician will seal the leaking ducts using approved compounds. Sealing the ducts will restore pressure, allowing air to flow correctly through the system.

If there are uncomfortable areas of your home, unbalanced ductwork could be the cause. The NATE-certified technicians of Nelson Comfort will test your ductwork to pinpoint the problems causing your discomfort.
