Test Drive Your Cincinnati Heating System Now

One great thing about the fall is the mild temperatures. Many of us can withstand the cooler weather without turning on the furnace or boiler until very cold temperatures move in. The problem with not turning the heating system on until you need its warmth is that it may not produce any warmth when you go to use it.

Many Cincinnati homeowners are met with a surprise on the first cold day of the fall season – their heating systems aren’t working! Not only do they suffer discomfort, but there may be a wait before heating can be restored, as we are fielding calls from many homeowners in the same situation!

Make sure you’re not stuck without heat when temperatures drop – take your furnace, heat pump, or boiler for a test drive now, while temperatures are still fairly warm.

• Before firing up your furnace or other heating equipment, inspect the area surrounding the system. It should be free of debris, and no flammable materials should be stored nearby.
• When you first fire up your heating system after a long spring and summer off, you may notice it produces a burning smell. This is normal, and is simply dust burning off heating elements. If the smell bothers you, open windows to air out your home. If the smell persists, it may indicate a system problem.
• Allow your furnace, heat pump, or boiler to run for ten minutes or so. Make sure it fires up, shuts off, and does not produce any troublesome sounds during the heating cycle.

In addition to testing your heating system, the fall is a good time to test and change batteries in your thermostat as well as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
