Prevent Air Conditioner Overheating This Summer

family-footer

Air conditioner overheating has the potential to damage your Cincinnati air conditioner beyond repair. Overheating is typically a symptom of a neglected system; to avoid costly overheating, make these simple steps a part of your maintenance routine.

1. Change your filters

If you only do one thing to maintain your air conditioner, make it regular filter changes! Of course, we recommend taking both these steps and undergoing professional preventative maintenance, but replacing an air filter is easy to do and has a vast impact on the performance of your air conditioning system.

The rate your filter needs changed will depend on the type of filter you’re using; typically, it should be changed every 3 months or so, but follow the manufacturer recommendations made specifically for your filter. During the summer, your air conditioner is heavily used, so you should check it more frequently to determine if it should be replaced sooner.

2. Air conditioner condenser care

The condenser is the cooling system component which sits outside your home. The condenser is exposed to dirt and debris through regular system operation, as well as through yard work and exposure to the elements. When dirt and debris build up on the condenser and its components, or these components become damaged by high winds, falling limbs, or a runaway ball, the unit will not work properly; when neglected, this buildup can cause irreversible damage.

We recommend you clean your condenser unit before the summer season; you may also find it necessary to clean it another time or two throughout the summer. Gently brush away dirt and debris from the fins, which wrap around the unit’s exterior. Never store outdoor furniture and other items close to the condenser, and do not plant shrubbery or other vegetation close, as these items can restrict airflow which the unit needs to cool your home properly; lack of airflow can cause the system to overheat.

If you’re having trouble with your air conditioner overheating this summer, call the Cincinnati air conditioner pros at Nelson Comfort for quick, reliable air conditioner repair.
