What Is A Packaged HVAC Unit?

In a traditional HVAC central forced-air system, there are two main components: a furnace for heat and an air conditioner for cool air. However, some homeowners might opt for a packaged HVAC unit instead. Packaged systems look very similar to a large air conditioning unit, except that it’s an all-in-one HVAC appliance that is spatially efficient. These are ideal for homes that do not have enough room in or under their house to fit a furnace cabinet. Both packaged HVAC Units and split systems are capable of heating and cooling in a variety of climates.

Nelson Comfort is Cincinnati’s trusted heating and cooling systems team. We’ll explain the key differences between packaged HVAC units to help you have a better understanding of your heating and cooling components.

How A Packaged HVAC System Works

A packaged HVAC unit houses all of the parts in an HVAC system in one cabinet. This cabinet contains an evaporator coil, condenser, and compressor as well as heating coils or heat strip elements. Packaged HVAC units are capable of both heating and cooling your home or business. They are commonly placed on a structure’s attic, roof, or on a concrete slab outside.

Packaged HVAC systems come in a variety of types. If you prefer the cooling efficiency of heat pump technology instead of relying on gas used in a furnace, you can find a packaged unit that fits your needs.

Different Types of Packaged HVAC Units

Just like central forced-air systems, you can find packaged units in a variety of configurations. You can decide which system is best for you based on your energy efficiency needs or climate.

Packaged Air Conditioners

This packaged system contains a compressor, coils, and air handler. Packaged air conditioner units can also provide limited warmth by using electrical strip elements. Electricity is used to heat these strips which warms them as it flows over the strips. This heating source is mainly used in warmer climates.

Packaged Heat Pump

A packaged heat pump system uses modern heat pump technology to heat and cool your home efficiently.

Packaged Gas-Electric Unit

This system uses a combines a gas-powered furnace with an electric air conditioner.

Packaged Dual Fuel System

A duel fuel packaged HVAC unit contains the energy-efficient power of a heat pump to both heating and cooling as well as a gas furnace. This packaged system optimizes the heating source for all kinds of weather conditions.

The Advantages of Packaged HVAC Units

You may prefer split systems for heating and cooling your home, but oftentimes the size of your building and property leave you with no choice. While split systems tend to be more efficient than packaged units, there are other advantages to packaged units

Packaged units are much easier to install and because both components are located outside your home, you’ll find them to be much less invasive and quieter than having a unit inside your home.

However, packaged HVAC systems have a shorter lifespan than a split system because your system is constantly exposed to elements outside which makes them prone to developing rust.
