What’s Included in a Spring HVAC Maintenance Checklist?

nsplash

Daylight savings time often aligns with the beginning of spring. Although it’s still cold in Cincinnati, spring will be here before you know it. Daylight savings time is a great way to remind yourself not just to change the clocks forward, but to do little chores around the house that you might have forgotten about like changing the batteries in your smoke detector.

The team at Nelson Comfort doesn’t want you to forget about important spring HVAC system maintenance either! That’s why we created an HVAC maintenance checklist for you to follow of simple tasks that can make a big difference for your HVAC system.

HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Doing this regular maintenance can help maintain the life of your heating and cooling system. This HVAC maintenance checklist is full of simple tasks that you don’t need an HVAC technician to help you with. You can do all of these simple tasks yourself.

Change Your Air Filters

Air filters not only help with indoor air quality but also protect your furnace from all the debris and dust that lives in your air vents from getting into your HVAC unit. It’s a good idea to get into the practice of changing your air filters every 3 months. However, if you’re not very diligent about doing this chore, this is your seasonal preventive maintenance reminder.

Check Your Thermostat Settings

When you’re changing your clocks during daylight savings time, don’t forget about the clock on your thermostat. If your thermostat is an hour behind the rest of your house, it could throw off your heating and cooling schedule. Older thermostats might not do this automatically, but smart thermostats do, which helps you save time.

Remove Debris From Around Your Outdoor Unit

As the temperature warms up, it’s a good idea to walk around your house and inspect your outdoor HVAC equipment as well. Remove any dirt or debris from around your HVAC unit such as leaves and twigs that may have fallen during the winter. When you mow your lawn in the spring, make sure you don’t let grass clippings from emptying onto the unit.

Shut Off The Water Supply To Your Humidifier

As the temperature outside rises so will the humidity, eliminating the need for using your whole-house humidifier, if you have one. Springtime is when you can turn off the water supply to your humidifier. In the fall, replace your humidifier wick filter and set the humidistat to 35-40% and turn the water supply back on.

Replace Your Carbon Monoxide Detector Batteries

Carbon monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas. It could be a dangerous situation if your home’s carbon monoxide detector can’t alert you of a carbon monoxide leak because the batteries were dead. While this item on our HVAC maintenance checklist doesn’t involve your HVAC unit specifically, carbon monoxide leaks can come from HVAC systems like furnaces and other household items that rely on natural gas.

While you have the batteries out, now is a good time to swap the batteries in your smoke detectors and thermostat (if it uses them) too.

Schedule Your Spring HVAC Inspection

It’s important to have regular HVAC maintenance done twice a year. Once in the spring and again in the fall. Now is the time to schedule your professional HVAC maintenance with Nelson Comfort.
