Guide to Setting Your Thermostat in Your Cincinnati Home
Cincinnati seasons are, at best, unpredictable. Knowing what temperature to set your thermostat to in your Cincinnati home can save a significant amount of money on energy bills throughout the year. And in Cincinnati, the cost savings generated throughout the winter and summer months can be substantial. Here is your Cincinnati guide to setting your thermostat in your home.
Fall and Spring Thermostat Settings
Although temperatures can vary greatly in Cincinnati during the fall and spring seasons, try to operate your thermostat at a temperature as close to the outside temp as possible. The closer your thermostat is to the outside temperature, the less your heating and air conditioning systems have to work and the lower your monthly energy bills will be.
Winter Months Thermostat Settings
During the winter months, set your thermostat at 68 degrees during the day. You will lower your energy usage cost by 5% to 15% during the winter months by lowering your thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours per day. Try lowering the thermostat while you sleep by using extra blankets. Many people actually sleep more comfortably at night with a lower temperature setting.
Summer Months Thermostat Settings
The recommended temperature to set your thermostat at during summer months is 78 degrees. If you are planning on being away from home for four or more hours, set the thermostat to turn on to a cooling mode only if the temperature in your home reaches above 88 degrees. You can save an estimated 6% to 8% for every degree above 78 that you set your thermostat to.
Out-of-Town Thermostat Settings
If you’re planning on being out of town for vacation, business, or any extended stay longer than three days, it’s important to set your thermostat to the most energy-efficient setting before you leave. In the summer months, set your thermostat to 80 to 89 degrees and 50 to 59 degrees in the winter to prevent against freezing pipes. If you live in an older home and temperatures outside are 20 degrees or lower, consider setting the temperature between 55 to 59 degrees to help prevent older pipes from freezing.
Install a Programmable Thermostat
The best way to save money on your energy bill in your Cincinnati home is to install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat will enable you to run a scheduled heating and cooling program throughout the day without the need to manually change settings. Most programmable thermostats can be set to change temperatures for up to six times a day and can easily be overridden manually if you want to change the temperature at any time without interrupting weekly or daily programming. A programmable thermostat can pay for itself in a matter of a few short months.
As the seasons change in Cincinnati, getting used to the cooler or warmer temperatures can take some time. Applying these guidelines to setting your thermostat for both comfort and savings will keep everyone in your home happy.
