End-of-Summer Air Conditioner Maintenance

family-footer

It’s officially fall in Cincinnati – home and business owners throughout the area are taking advantage of milder weather, working outdoors to knock tasks off their fall to-do lists. While hopefully you’ve scheduled fall preventative maintenance for your furnace or other heating system, did you know your air conditioner could benefit from some end-of-summer care?

Below you’ll find a few end-of-summer air conditioner maintenance steps that should be added to your to-do list to protect your equipment through the cold months.

1. Clean around your exterior air conditioning unit

At the end of summer, you should always clean the area surrounding your outdoor air conditioning unit. Yard debris, sticks, and vegetation may have grown up and accumulated around the unit over the summer and should be cleared away. This will prevent contaminants from being pulled into the system next cooling season, causing indoor air quality issues and possibly damaging system components. If trees extend over your unit, trim away limbs and branches which could fall on the air conditioner, damaging it over the winter.

2. Change your air filters

Just because you won’t be using your air conditioner over the winter doesn’t mean you can stop changing the filters! Both your air conditioner and heating system utilize the same filter to remove contaminants from your air supply – if you stop changing it, the dirty filter will cause problems for your furnace this winter, and could cause damage to mutual components which will affect air conditioner performance come spring. If your system is due for a filter change this fall, replace the existing filter with a new one and continue to change it on your regular schedule throughout the fall and winter months.

Let Nelson Comfort prepare your air conditioner for the long break ahead – gain peace of mind that once winter passes, your Cincinnati air conditioner will fire up just as expected when warm weather comes around again. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.
