Homeowners Should Match Evaporator Coils and Condenser Coils

family-footer

Many homeowners in Cincinnati may not realize the importance of their evaporator and condenser coils matching. The benefit of having properly sized and matched coils is an increase in efficiency and productivity within the air conditioning unit. When the evaporator coil and condenser coil don’t match up, there are several problems that can occur for homeowners.

How They Work Together

The evaporator coils and the condenser coils are not housed in the same unit but they do work together to remove moisture and heat from your home. First the evaporator absorbs the heat from your inside air. The heated air then travels by way of the refrigerant lines to the condenser coils. The condenser coils then deposit the heat into the outdoor air. The evaporator coils are located inside the indoor unit of the air conditioning system. The condenser coils are found in the outdoor unit of the air conditioning system. Both coils are calculated to match perfectly in size.

Problems of Mismatched Coils

  • #1 Problem – Increase in monthly energy bills.
    • Smaller coils can’t keep up with the size of the larger coils, which makes the whole system work longer and consumes more energy.
  • #2 Problem – Decrease in home temperature comfort.
    • When coils aren’t properly sized to work together, higher temperatures can run wild in your home and increase the humidity levels quite a bit.
  • #3 Problem – Mismatched coils may violate the warranty.
    • Most manufacture warranties require that when replacing the evaporator coil or the condenser coil, both coils must be the same size. Also, most warranties specify that the coils have to have the same SEER rating. If the coils aren’t the same size (and SEER rating) then the warranty can be voided for remainder of the warranty time covered.
  • #4 Problem – Lifespan of the unit is reduced.
    • When the condenser coil and evaporator coil aren’t properly matched, it makes the system work twice as hard and longer to facilitate the temperature needs of the home. Working twice as hard create unnecessary wear-and-tear on the system’s main components, which leads to continuous breakdowns.
