30% Geothermal Federal Tax Credit
Geothermal heating and cooling systems are the most energy efficient option for heating and cooling your Cincinnati home. The energy savings they generate is tremendous, but the cost to install one of these systems is in the thousands. Luckily, there is a 30 percent federal tax credit available for homeowners who purchase and install qualifying geothermal systems, which can help lower the overall system cost.
Tax credits are incentives which allow you to deduct the amount of the credit from the amount you owe in taxes. This federal tax credit equals 30 percent of the total cost of your qualifying geothermal system, including labor. There is no maximum credit amount. Additional credits and incentives may be offered by your state or your utility provider, which can help you further reduce the cost of your new system.
To qualify for the 30 percent geothermal tax credit, the system must:
• Use ground or ground water as the thermal energy source or thermal energy sink for heating and cooling the home.
• Meet the ENERGY STAR® program requirements that are in effect when the system is purchased.
All expenses relating to the geothermal heat pump and its components as well as the installation of the heat pump and ground loop apply to the tax credit. The tax credit is only available for geothermal systems that heat and cool homes; systems used only to heat a pool or hot tub do not qualify.
Some components may not be covered:
• Add-on components which are not essential to the operation of the system
• Backup heating and cooling equipment
• Duct work
This tax credit applies to residential geothermal systems placed in service on or after January 1, 2009. Homeowners have until December 31, 2016 to install a qualifying geothermal system in order to take advantage of the tax credit. New construction and existing residences, both primary residences and second homes located in the United States, qualify for the tax credit.
